ARRAY Crew began with an idea to fill a necessary gap in the hiring practices of the film and television industry. It started with SELMA when director-producer Ava DuVernay noticed that within the status quo of the studio system, there were only a handful of a certain kind of people making films and TV shows. While working hard to diversify the crews of SELMA, A WRINKLE IN TIME and Queen Sugar, the idea for ARRAY Crew was born.
ARRAY Crew was initially conceived as a nicely bound binder with profiles of below-the-line crew members that could be shared with interested producers and department heads. But soon, the vision took hold with the commitment of every major U.S.-based studio and streamer. A woman-led team was commissioned to create a proprietary online database that launched with thousands of below-the-line crew members and has not stopped growing.
